ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Get more of The Makaha Sons

Advertiser Staff

The Makaha Sons will stage their popular "Take a Walk in the Country 5" concert Saturday at the Waikiki Shell. Because of requests from their fans, the group — Louis "Moon" Kauakahi, John Koko and Jerome Koko — will schedule two "on stage" times, from 7 to 8 p.m. and from 8:20 to 9:20 p.m. In earlier outings, The Makaha Sons sacrificed most of their performance time to guest stars. Previous concerts have been taped and the next one will be, too, with the first in a series of "Country" DVDs due this year. For tickets: (877) 750-4400.

STEP IT UP

STRIDE YOUR WAY TO A LONGER, HEALTHIER LIFE

Regular walking can become habitual in a short time. One month of brisk walking 30 minutes a day, five days a week can establish a life-changing habit guaranteed to help you feel better, increase energy, control weight and reduce stress. Tips to keep walking part of your life include holding walking meetings, parking several blocks away from your destination, walking while you wait for your kids, taking mass transit, and logging your walking time. This week marks the conclusion of the first phase of the Step It Up Hawaii campaign — and it's just a beginning. We will continue to work with Lt. Gov. Duke Aiona's office, the Legislature, and community groups to continue to make Hawai'i friendly to walkers. The goal: to make walking the easiest choice for recreation and transportation for trips of a mile or less. Isn't it time you started?
