Here's another chance to get a copy of 'Island Plate' cookbook

 •  Cool off with cukes

Advertiser Staff

Good news! More copies of "The Island Plate," The Advertiser's 150th Anniversary cookbook, are coming. You can order it only online, and there is a shipping charge. We will not sell "The Island Plate" at our office, and it's not available in bookstores. The 3,000 additional copies will be ready sometime in August, when our fulfillment company will send them out to those who have made orders. To place your order, go to http://shop.honoluluadvertiser.com.

BERRY GOOD FOR YOU

ACAI TAKES LOCAL HEALTH-FOOD STORES BY STORM

Step aside, goji juice; acai (pronounced ah-sigh-ee) is in town. This palm berry originally from the Brazilian rainforest is the latest hot health-food fad, praised for its high concentration of antioxidants, essential fatty acids omegas 6 and 9, fiber and protein. Acai tastes like a blend of berries and chocolate and is an extremely rich source of energy because it is infused with guarana, a natural source of caffeine also native to Brazil.

Health-food stores are selling juice combinations (mango, etc.) made with acai. And last week Jamba Juice Hawaii introduced the Acai Cup on O'ahu ($4.95 for 16 ounces, $5.95 for 24 ounces), a filling smoothie "meal in a cup" because it's thicker with the added "chew" factor of granola and banana. A 24-ounce original Acai Cup contains 40 milligrams of caffeine (a can of soda contains 35 milligrams), 15 grams of protein and is an excellent source of vitamin C, calcium and antioxidants.
