Kansas pitcher Marciel, UH's Catricala honored

Kansas pitcher Wally Marciel, a 2006 'Iolani School graduate from Kailua, has been named to the Freshman All-America Second Team by Ping/Baseball, an online college baseball publication based in Omaha, Neb.

Marciel, a 6-foot-2 left-hander, worked 59 1/3 innings and compiled a 5-3 record and 3.94 ERA. He struck out 47, walked 18 and finished the season strong.

After April 1, Marciel went 3-1 with a 1.78 ERA and 26 strikeouts in 35 1/3 innings. In his only loss during that stretch, he took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.

Also earning Ping honors was Hawai'i's Vinnie Catricala, who was named honorable mention at designated hitter.

Catricala, earlier named to the Louisville Slugger Freshmen All-America team, batted . 307 with six doubles, a triple, two home runs and 27 RBIs.
