Student video targets underage drinking

By Kim Fassler

Students from Kapolei, Roosevelt and Kaimuki High Schools are teaming up with the city to send a powerful message about teenage drinking and driving.

A group of 30 students from the three high schools planned, acted in and filmed a video titled "Shattered Dreams Hawai'i."

The film includes mock scenes of a car crash and a funeral in which Traci Ann Taniguchi, a senior at Kaimuki, plays herself — as one of three students killed by a drunken driver.

"Shattered Dreams Hawai'i" will air this weekend on 'Olelo, Channel 56, at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 p.m. on Sunday.

In creating the video, the students worked with different city groups including the Liquor Commission, the Honolulu Police Department and Emergency Medical Services.

The city also will show the video at Satellite City Halls, Motor Vehicle Licensing Stations and at other city venues such as "Sunset on the Beach," Mayor Mufi Hannemann said at a news conference today. Hannemann also presented certificates of merit to the students today.

Concerns or reports about underage drinking or drinking and driving can be directed to the Liquor Commission hotline, 523-4191.
