Red Sox will be hitting the beach (volleyball)

Associated Press

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox are going to the beach.

Fenway Sports Group, the baseball club's sports marketing affiliate, is teaming up with the national beach volleyball tour to stage an event in Boston this summer. The AVP Boston Open will take place in nearby Quincy Aug. 16-19.

"Since we're in a baseball stadium, I'd say it's a home run," Logan Tom, a two-time Olympian with Hawaii ties, said at a news conference at Fenway Park yesterday.

FSG is a wholly owned subsidiary of New England Sports Ventures, which owns the Red Sox, their ballpark and 80 percent of their television network. The group has increasingly branched out beyond baseball, buying half of the Roush NASCAR team while also teaming up to promote Boston College and the PGA tour's Deutsche Bank Championship.

"Professional beach volleyball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country," FSG president Mike Dee said. "New England has some of the most passionate and enthusiastic sports fans, and we look forward to introducing AVP."
