$700K in work slated for Diamond Head monument

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle yesterday released $700,000 for improvements to the Diamond Head State Monument. The funds will be used to stabilize the rock face above the access tunnel and make various safety improvements throughout the state park.

Improvements will help in rock fall mitigation and slope erosion that have affected both interior trail sections and the park's entrance, as well as Diamond Head Road.

"Diamond Head is our most recognized landmark on O'ahu which is visited by both visitors and residents alike," Lingle said in a released statement. "These repairs are part of our administration's commitment to ensure proper stewardship of this icon and our state parks."

An additional $4 million has been included in the administration's budget request for FY07-09 for improvements to the rock face adjacent to the summit trail, the exterior rock face adjacent to Poka Place, and exterior rock faces along Diamond Head Road.
