Fallen coconut tree caused Kahala outage

Hawaiian Electric Co. restored power to 225 customers in Kahala at about 5 p.m. today after a 2›-hour outage caused by a downed coconut tree.

HECO spokesman Peter Rosegg said the tree fronting 4615 Kahala Ave. fell on electrical wires at about 2:30 p.m., causing an outage along the beachfront area, Waialae Country Club and for some homes toward Kahala Mall.

Repair crews worked on switching lines to restore power and only 100 customers were without electricity by 4:30 p.m. They were back on line within a half hour, said Rosegg.

It is unknown what caused the tree to fall, he said.

The incident briefly slowed traffic in the area, according to police.
