Film festival for kids coming to Hawai'i

By Catherine E. Toth
Advertiser Urban Honolulu Writer

The first-ever KIDS FIRST! Film Festival comes to Hawai'i on Sunday with movies geared toward tweens.

Movies will start at 4 p.m. every Sunday from June 17 through July 22 at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa's Yukiyoshi Room, Krauss Hall 012.

"Cool Schools," "Tweens Feature Film," "Tails and Adventures" and "Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies," are a few films on the schedule.

Now in its eighth year, the film festival travels to more than 100 locations and offers sneak peaks at films from major studios, classic films, independents and shorts in a variety of styles including animation and live action. The films are evaluated by juries of adults and kids and must meet the Kids First! criteria of no gratuitous violence, no racial or cultural bias, no inappropriate content and no condescension toward children.

The film festival is a project of the Coalition for Quality Children's Media.
