Top-seed Ota advances to Manoa Cup quarterfinals

Defending champ and top seed Jonathan Ota and second seed Edward Stenftenagel cruised into the quarterfinals with runaway victories today at the 99th Manoa Cup at Oahu Country Club.

Ota defeated Troy Gibbons, 6 and 5, in the round of 16 and will face 13-year-old Lorens Chan, who beat Ryan Hironaka, 6 and 5.

Stenftenagel, of Indian Wells, Calif., defeated Shane Adversalo, 8 and 7, and will face David Fink, who beat Kellen Watabu, 4 and 3.

Taeksoo Kim ousted third-seeded Doug Williams 3 and 1, and Brandan Kop eliminated fourth-seeded Ryan Perez, 2 up.

Kim will face Max Bonk, who defeated David Saka, 3 and 1. Kop, a four-time Manoa Cup champion, will play Kurt Nino, who beat fifth-seeded Erick Ellgren, 3 and 1.

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held tomorrow with the 36-hole final on Saturday.

The Manoa Cup is the Hawai'i state amateur match play championship.
