Suspect in car break-in series arrested

Advertiser Staff

A man who allegedly broke into 15 cars and stole items ranging from loose change to purses and backpacks was arrested June 9 following a tip from the public.

John Amii, 20, had allegedly been smashing the windows and punching car locks with screwdrivers in the Kapahulu and Waikiki areas.

He was seen on surveillance video in different parking structures.

A CrimeStopper tip led to the suspect, who was located and arrested on June 9, at 8:20 a.m., police said.

Amii was arrested and charged with breaking into a car and theft.

"Whatever he could find in a car, he would," said Honolulu police Sgt. Kim Buffett. "We would like to thank the public for coming forward and this case shows that with the public's help we can catch these guys."
