DUI arrests up 13 percent on Big Island

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police arrest arrested 29 motorists for drunk driving from June 5 to June 11, raising the total of DUI arrests to 588 this year compared to 522 over the same time period in 2006.

Six of the drivers arrested last week were involved in traffic accidents and four were younger than 21.

While DUI arrests are up 13 percent, major accidents on the Big Island have decreased 18 percent. Through June 11 there have been 925 major accidents, compared to 1,127 over the same time span in 2006.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue island wide, police said.
