The fire damaged a building at 1350 Sand Island Parkway. A private contractor uses the facility to make fertilizers, Main said.

Firefighters removed some fertilizer from a hopper, which helped to prevent the fire from spreading. No one was in the building at the time. Main said the fire was under control by 3:55 a.m.

Three engines with 20 firefighters responded to the call.

The Sand Island Wastewater Treatment Plant began its operations in 1978 and services areas from Kuli'ou'ou Valley to Aliamanu.
