The public is invited to pick fruit from plum trees that were planted for that purpose at Koke'e in the 1930s.

"This year's opening is early due to the early ripening of the fruits. However, the plum crop was affected by the strong winds we experienced in April," said Kaua'i Parks District Superintendent Wayne Souza.

Harvesting is permitted between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. in designated areas. Each person will be allowed to take up to five pounds of plums per day for personal consumption. Other conditions will be specified on the plum harvesting permit. A short pole with a net will make harvesting easier.

Permits to harvest are available at the Koke'e State Park Headquarters. In past years, about 250 permits were issued during the first weekend. Approximately 75 percent of the crop is harvested during the first weekend.
