Beckham takes pay cut — sort of — to play for L.A.

Soccer superstar David Beckham has taken a pay cut by joining L.A. Galaxy and rejecting an extra year at Real Madrid, the Independent reported.

Citing figures from the U.S. players' union, the paper said Beckham will earn $6.5 million a year. He would have earned about twice as much by staying in Spain, it said.

Beckham's total earnings over his five-year contract in the U.S. could spiral to 128 million pounds (about $250 million), including off-field endorsements, the Independent said.
