Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame holds concert July 19

News Release

The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame today said that it will celebrate the musical stylings and contributions of its 2006 inductees — Mahi Beamer, The Brothers Cazimero, Nina Keali'iwahamana, and Emma Veary — with "Lei of Stars." The special concert will be held at 7 p.m. July 19 at the Hawaii Theatre.

The hula halau of Pohai Souza and Robert Cazimero will also perform along with Randall Hongo and Harry B. Soria, Jr. will serve as master of ceremonies.

The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization created in 1994 to recognize the musical achievements of significant composers, singers, and performers of Hawaiian music. "As the Hawaiian music landscape changes and evolves we wanted to create something that would preserve and perpetuate our cultural and musical past," said Kahauanu Lake, chairman of the advisory selection committee. "Our hope is that the hall of fame will become a source that new musicians and listeners alike, as well as future generations can look to for guidance. We want this to be a source that they can look to as they seek to understand traditional Hawaiian music and be inspired to continue performing it."

Exposing new audiences to traditional Hawaiian music is also a crucial part of the hall of fame's mission. "I know people that have lived in Hawai'i all of their lives and have never been exposed to it," said Kimo Stone, Hall of Fame president and one of its serenaders. "It personally saddens me to think that local folks and visitors alike are missing out on the beautiful melodies and poetry that is Hawaiian music."

Tickets for the "Lei of Stars" are on sale at the Hawaii Theatre box office, 528-0506.
