One injured in Big Island fire

Advertiser Staff

Firefighters on the Big Island were continuing to put out hot spots this afternoon from a brushfire on Parker Ranch and federal lands. One person was injured in the blaze, a Hawai'i County Fire Department news release said. The extent of the injury was not released.

The fire had burned an estimated 560 acres as of yesterday afternoon, the fire department said.

The fire was reported about 1 p.m. yesterday east of Hwy 190 and south of West Hawaii Concrete. Forty-nine fighters and five military personnel have fought the blaze. Dozers and helicopters have been used to get the fire under control. The HFD news release said 50 percent of the fire was contained within fire breaks as of 9:13 p.m., but the fire was still not deemed under control early this morning. The wildland grass fire was burning in an inaccessible area south of the West Hawaii Concrete Facility, the news release said, and the fire was heading south toward Saddle Road.

Cause of the fire is under investigation.
