Sunday will be the last day of operation for the Varsity Twin Cinema, an aging movie theater — long known for art-house and foreign film offerings — near the University of Hawai'i's Manoa campus.

Consolidated Theatres owns the 1.7-acre property at 1106 University Ave., near Beretania Street. The theater was built in 1939.

A news released issued by Consolidated officials this afternoon said:

"Consolidated is committed to delivering a diverse slate of movies to Hawai'i. Independent and art films like "Curse of the Golden Flower", "Pan's Labrynth", and "The Waitress" have been showcased at our Ward and newly renovated Kahala locations."

The statement also noted that Consolidated Theatres has offered employment to all members of the Varsity team in surrounding theater locations.
