Strong winds east of New Zealand have produced a swell that will roll in along south-facing shores today, putting the shorelines under a high-surf advisory until 6 p.m.

The National Weather Service's forecast calls for surf along south shores to be 5 feet to 8 feet. An advisory means waves will be higher than normal and beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water because of hazardous wave action and strong rip currents.

The rest of today's surf forecast calls for surf along west shores to be 3 feet to 6 feet, east shores to see surf 4 feet to 7 feet and north shores to see surf of 2 feet or less.

The current south swell will slowly decline through the weekend. Strengthening trade winds will elevate the surf along east-facing shores near the high surf advisory threshold of 8 feet over the weekend. Otherwise, no significant swells are expected.
