Big DreamWorks Kaua'i film project looking for local extras

Wayne Harada
Advertiser entertainment writer

Local actors, from 18 to 80 with all body types and looks, are sought for a major DreamWorks-Red Hour Films comedy entitled "Tropic Thunder," which will film on the Garden Island from mid-July to mid-August. With a $100 million budget, "Thunder" looms as one of the largest studio endeavors to be filmed on Kaua'i.

Ben Stiller will star in the movie and also direct; the high-profile cast includes Tom Cruise, Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr. Production officials have been on Kaua'i since December to prep for production. With a three-month shooting schedule (and a seven-month pre-production residency), the film rivals previous Garden Isle visits by films such as "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Jurassic Park," which also were DreamWorks releases.

The project is described as a movie within a movie, involving actors who are to shoot a Vietnam-type war movie on location, when unexpected circumstances force the actors to become the soldiers they are supposed to portray.

Locals are sought for a variety of extra roles, with auditions set from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, June16, and again June 23 at the ResortQuest Kaua'i Beach at Makaiwa, in Kapa'a. All ethnicities are sought to portray hotel staff, bodyguards, assistants, bartenders, military types and tattoo artists. Roles for athletic guys and beautiful women are also available and applicants should be available for work from July through October. Casual attire is suggested; plain tank tops or T-shirts (without words, without Hawaiian prints) are best.

Kaua'i's lush, verdant landscape has been a favorite for the Indiana Jones and Jurassic Park franchises, and with DreamWorks set to do yet another Indy film, the island could get yet another boost on the big screen.
