Cuban, Dominican volleyball players get doping bans

Associated Press

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Volleyball players from Cuba and the Dominican Republic received doping bans from the international volleyball federation on today.

An FIVB anti-doping panel found Cuba's Osmany Juantorena Portuondo guilty of breaking the federation's medical regulations and gave him a two-year suspension.

The ban was backdated to Nov. 18, 2006, when Juantorena first received a provisional suspension. FIVB did not say which substance Juantorena had taken.

Evelyn Carrera Pichardo of the Dominican Republic received a one-year ban starting June 12. FIVB said the offense occurred through no significant fault or negligence of her own.

Pichardo tested positive for the anabolic steroid clostebol on Nov. 1, after team doctor Maria Josefin Cordero used the banned substance to treat the player's skin rash.

An FIVB investigation recommended banning Cordero for life from working as an FIVB team doctor, but the anti-doping panel gave her a four-year suspension starting June 12
