Kahala outage caused by tree

Advertiser Staff

Hawaiian Electric Co. restored power to 225 customers in Kahala at about 5 p.m. yesterday after a 2 1/2-hour blackout caused by a downed coconut tree.

HECO spokesman Peter Rosegg said a tree in front of 4615 Kahala Ave. fell on electrical wires about 2:30 p.m., cutting off power along the beachfront, Waialae Country Club and for some homes toward Kahala Mall.

Repair crews worked on switching lines to restore power, and only 100 customers were without electricity by 4:30 p.m. They were back online within a half-hour, Rosegg said.

It was not known what caused the tree to fall, he said.
