Gerry Weber tennis Open final set

Associated Press

HALLE, Germany — Marcos Baghdatis defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber 7-6 (1), 6-4 today to set up a match with Tomas Berdych in the Gerry Weber Open final.

The fourth-seeded Berdych advanced to the final for a second straight year with a 7-6 (5), 6-4 win against Jarkko Nieminen.

Baghdatis hit a couple of key aces in saving six break points against the German, who had beaten Baghdatis in their previous two matches. Baghdatis, a Wimbledon semifinalist last year, will be playing for the title in Halle on his 22nd birthday tomorrow.

Berdych lost last year's final in Halle to Roger Federer, then went on to reach Wimbledon's fourth round.

"Last year it was a surprise to me that I could play so well on grass," the 12th-ranked Berdych said. "Now I know that is something I can do."
