The 48-Hour Film Project, which gives filmmaking teams the opportunity to write, shoot and edit their film within a 48-hour period, July 20-22, after receiving a genre, character, prop and line of dialogue that they must work into their film. Hawai'i Theatre Apprentice Program, attend classes, go on field trips and talk with visiting artists to learn specific areas of theater production including set, costume and lighting design, stage management and directing; open to public, private and home-schooled high school students; $200 lab fee for the 2007-08 season. MUSIC/DANCE

Honolulu Men's Chorus seeks new singers — gay and gay-friendly men in all vocal ranges — to join the chorus in their rehearsals for Faure's "Requiem," 7-9 p.m. Wednesdays. Call for location: 429-9600.

"Hawaii Stars" seeks singers, ages 16-28, to audition for the opportunity to go to the "American Idol" auditions on the West Coast. Apply online by Friday at www.hawaiistars.com to compete at the final audition on Saturday.

"From the Top," the National Public Radio program that showcases young classical musicians, will be taping two programs in Hawai'i in November. Pre-college-age students who would like to audition can get information on qualifications and download an application at www.hawaiipublicradio.org/events or www.fromthetop.org. Application deadline is Sept. 5.

PAGEANTS

2008 Narcissus Queen Pageant, sponsored by the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, is accepting applications for the pageant scheduled for Jan. 5. Contestants must be single (never married or given birth), between 19 and 26 years of age on the date of the pageant, at least one-half Chinese, and a Hawai'i resident. 2007-08 Miss & Mister Island Gem Pageant seeks female and male contestants of any age for the Oct. 20 pageant at Zanzabar Nightclub. Registration fee is $25; entry, training fee is $50 for ages 9 and younger and $100 for ages 10 and older. Application: 853-7216. Deadline is Aug. 11.
