Free speed and quickness clinics on Kauai

Being a young athlete on Kauai just got a whole lot better.

Starting tomorrow and running through the summer, young athletes can join in county-sponsored speed and quickness clinics for soccer, football and volleyball. Free transportation to and from the clinics is being provided by The Kauai Bus.

University of Hawai'i assistant soccer coach Joshua Fouts, along with UH student athletes Jessica Domingo, Shawn Higa and Lehua Wood, will be flying to Kaua'i for the soccer clinics, covering basic as well as more advanced techniques.

The workshops will be held as follows:

  • Tuesday, Waimea High School, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., ages 6 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to

    12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

  • Wednesday, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., ages 6 to

    12, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

  • Thursday, Kapa'a High School, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. ages 6 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to

    12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

    Conducted by Coaches Mel DeLaura, Terrence Duffield, George Lumpkin, Rich Miano, Dan Morrison and Jeff Reinebold, the football camps will be held at Vidinha Stadium from June 22 to 24, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., ages 6 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

    For those interested in bettering their volleyball skills, UH assistant volleyball coach Mike Sealy and UH student athletes Tara Hittle, Dani Mafua and Nickie Thomas will offer their expertise.

    They'll facilitate volleyball clinics scheduled on the following dates and times:

  • June 26, Waimea High School gym, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., ages 5 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 pm, 13 and older.

  • June 27, Chiefess Kamakahelei Middle School, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. ages 5 to noon, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

  • June 28, Kapa'a High School gym, 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., ages 5 to 12, and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., 13 and older.

    Participants are required to wear athletics shoes and arrive 45 minutes prior to the start of each clinic.

    If additional support or an auxiliary aid is required for a child to participate, please call Ignacio or Koki at least five days before the clinics begin.
