Dodger pitcher Schmidt going on DL again

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES— Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Jason Schmidt is going back on the disabled list because of a right shoulder problem.

Schmidt was ineffective Saturday in his third start since missing 45 games because of bursitis in his shoulder, and admitted that something wasn't quite right.

"I just haven't felt like myself," he said.

Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said utilityman Marlon Anderson, who underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery last month, will be activated and meet the team before Tuesday night's game in Toronto.

Schmidt, who signed a three-year, $47 million free-agent contract during the offseason, was placed on the disabled list in April after going 1-2 with a 7.36 ERA in three starts. He returned June 5 and threw six shutout innings in San Diego, consistently reaching 89 mph and topping out at 91.

But the 34-year-old right-hander didn't perform nearly as well in his last two starts, and his velocity was down. He gave up five hits and three runs in 4 2-3 innings Saturday, walking four and striking out two to leave him with a 1-4 record and a 6.31 ERA.

Schmidt was to be examined Monday in Los Angeles by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, Rawitch said.

Anderson, a backup infielder and outfielder, experienced lingering problems following offseason surgery, and he underwent surgery after an MRI exam May 7 revealed bone chips and scar tissue. He is hitting .222 in 18 at-bats.
