Late Hawai'i congresswoman Patsy Mink will be honored this evening at a Washington reception held to mark the 35th anniversary of Title IX and University of Hawai'i women's athletics.

Mink helped author Title IX of the Education Act, which bans gender discrimination in schools that receive federal funds. Proponents credit it with revolutionizing women's sports and the public's attitudes about women's abilities in athletics.

Following Mink's death in 2002, the legislation was renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act.

The four members of Hawai'i's congressional delegation — fellow Democrats Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka and Reps. Neil Abercrombie and Mazie Hirono — were to attend the reception featuring Hawaiian entertainment at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Wendy Mink, the late congresswoman's daughter, was also to attend. Other guests included California Democratic Reps. Lynn Woolsey and George Miller, and Lisa Maatz, director of Policy and Government Relations of the American Society of University Women.

Constance H. Lau, president and CEO of Hawaiian Electric Industries and chairwoman, president and CEO of American Savings Bank, is chairing the reception. She is also chairing events planned in Hawai'i this summer to raise funds to endow a women's athletic scholarship in Mink's name at the University of Hawai'i.
