State closes Pu'u O'o trail as a precaution

State and federal officials have announced a series of measures in response to the uncertainty over the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, including the closing of the state's Pu'u 'O'o Trail, which is also known as Captain's Trail or Kahauale'a Trail.

"Given the trail's location and recent seismic activity of Kilauea, Hawai'i County Civil Defense and the National Park Service – Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park contacted DLNR and recommended that the trail be closed," said DLNR interim chairman Allan Smith in a news release. A notice of closure has been posted at the trailhead on Highway 11 in Glenwood.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service has closed the Chain of Craters and Hilina Pali Road and the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park eastern boundary near Kalapana. All east rift and coastal trails are also closed.

There are no lava flows into the ocean, the park said in a news release.
