Maui police recover knives in assault case

The Maui News

OLOWALU – A 22-year-old man was charged with assaulting his wife, who suffered numerous lacerations to her face from a knife Saturday, police said.

Senita M. Tuivailala, who gave no local address, was being held with bail set at $27,000 Monday at the Wailuku Police Station. He was charged with first-degree assault and two counts of abuse of a family member, The Maui News reported.

Police initially responded to a report of an attempted suicide about 10 a.m. Saturday in Olowalu, where Tuivailala and his wife were living on the beach, said Lt. Chad Viela of the Lahaina Criminal Investigation Division.

He said the 22-year-old woman was transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where she was treated in the emergency room for her injuries.

But Viela said further investigation revealed that the woman's injuries didn't appear to be self-inflicted.

Tuivailala was arrested Saturday afternoon at the emergency room. His wife was released after being treated.

Police recovered several knives as part of the continuing investigation, Viela said.
