Poll shows Clinton gaining; actor challenging Giuliani

A new poll shows Hillary Clinton has bulked up her lead in the Democratic presidential race, and Rudy Giuliani is suddenly challenged by an actor who isn't even a fully declared candidate.

The Gallup/USA Today poll out Monday had Clinton leading Barack Obama 39 percent to 26 percent, without Al Gore in the race. With him, her lead tightens a hair to 33 percent to 21 percent, with the former vice president getting 18 percent.

Giuliani, grabbing 29 percent of the support from Republicans, is followed by "Law & Order" star Fred Thompson at 21 percent and Arizona Sen. John McCain at 20 percent.

Experts and campaign aides warned that the results are interesting for insiders, but for voters who are more focused on their summer vacations, the rankings probably have more to do with name recognition.

"The only way this is really significant is to the media and for the signals it sends to donors," said Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer. "For them, it's like watching the stock market for some idea of where the money will go."
