Man pleads guilty to federal drug and firearm charges

Advertiser Staff

A 55-year-old man who contended he acted in self defense in a fatal shooting has pleaded guilty to federal drug and firearm charges.

Keith Kuraoka was accused of shooting a suspected armed robber outside Kuraoka's Makaha home on March 24. Kuraoka was arrested by police, but released without being charged pending investigation.

Authorities later obtained a warrant, searched Kuraoka's home and recovered crystal methamphetamine and a .22-caliber rifle, according to police.

Kuraoka pleaded guilty on Monday to ice and firearm charges. The ice charge carries a prison term of 10 years to life; the firearm charge up to 10 years.

Kuraoka, who is being held without bail, is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 15.

The man killed was Jason H. Sylva, 28, one of three men who police said had been trying to break into Kuraoka's home.
