Gov. Linda Lingle has released $8.8 million for improvements at Campbell High, Wai'anae High and Highlands Intermediate schools. The projects include new classroom construction, air conditioning and electrical upgrades, and installation of fencing.
"These projects are needed to meet the enrollment growth and enhance the education of our students, while ensuring their safety and health," Lingle said in a news release. "The environment in which our students learn is a major factor in their educational success."
Campbell High School: Nearly $6.7 million will be used to construct an eight-classroom building that will include two science and five general-education classrooms and one special-education classroom. In 2006, Lingle released $575,000 for the design of the building to address overcrowding at the school.
The school's current enrollment of 2,009 is expected to increase to 2,225 by 2009. The project is currently in the design phase and construction is scheduled for completion before the 2009-2010 school year.
Wai'anae High School: About $2 million will be used to install air conditioning and upgrade electricity in Buildings A and B on the Wai'anae High campus. The project will start in July 2007 and installation is scheduled for completion in August 2008.
Highlands Intermediate Schools: About $170,000 will be used to install a fence between the school and the Pearl City District Park. The fence will provide increased security at the school and protect students, staff and property by preventing vandalism and trespassing. The design for the project will begin this month and installation is scheduled to be completed in May 2008.
