Heart attack killed man involved in Big Island crash

Advertiser Staff

A 70-year-old man involved in a one-vehicle crash on Old Mamalahoa Highway and Kapuna Road on Saturday died from a heart attack, an autopsy has determined.

Louis D. Vierra of Ahualoa on the Big Island was operating a 1984 Toyota pickup truck and was traveling north on Mamalahoa Highway when the truck veered off the right side of the road and struck an embankment. Police said the truck then came back onto the road, crossed the centerline and struck a utility pole on the left side of the road.

Police responded to the call at 9:04 a.m. Fire Rescue personnel transported the victim to North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:57 a.m.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers initiated a coroner's inquest case and ordered an autopsy, which took place Monday morning at Kona Community Hospital.
