NBA: Carter recognized for helping Florida schools

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Vince Carter received a "Point of Light" award today from Florida Gov. Charlie Crist in recognition of his volunteer efforts to help students and people in need.The New Jersey Nets star has given college scholarships, books and donations to all of Volusia County's public schools through his Embassy of Hope Foundation. That includes a $2.5 million contribution toward rebuilding Mainland High School, which he attended in Daytona Beach.
He also distributed food baskets to needy families at Christmas, provided housing and utilities for a family displaced by Hurricane Katrina and appeared at charity fundraisers.
"Vince has used his talents and success to improve the lives of others," Crist said. "His contributions bring opportunities and inspire the youth in his community to pursue a well-rounded education."
Crist gives the "Point of Light" award each week to a Florida resident.
