HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police today identified a 28-year-old man who died yesterday in a shooting incident and a 45-year-old man — a suspect in the incident — who died hours later in a traffic crash.

A fire department rescue crew found Jeremy Napoleon, of Kea'au, on the lawn of a home in the Hawaiian Paradise Park subdivision with a gunshot wound to the chest at about 10:52 a.m. He was taken to the Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m., police said.

Noel Smith, of Kurtistown, a suspect in the shooting, died about four hours later in a crash on Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala, police said.

Smith was reportedly driving north near the 7-mile marker in a 2007 Dodge pickup truck when he crossed the centerline, struck an embankment and overturned. He was ejected from the truck, and was pronounced dead at North Hawai'i Community Hospital at 2:48 p.m.

Police said they recovered a firearm at the scene of Smith's crash, but have not yet confirmed whether it was the weapon used in the Puna shooting.

Detectives are still investigating the relationship between Napoleon and Smith, and what the motive for the shooting might have been.

Autopsies on both bodies are scheduled for Friday to determine the exact causes of both deaths.

Police ask anyone with any further information about the case to call Det. Darren Horio at (808) 961-2385, or the police department's non-emergency number, (808) 935-3311.
