Hilo man, 90, injured in parking area accident dies

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — A 90-year-old Hilo man who was hurt in a May 3 traffic accident has died of his injuries, Big island police said.

Henry Barba, of Hilo, was reversing in a 1989 Dodge multi-purpose vehicle from a parking stall at the Kamana Elderly Housing complex when he struck a wooden wall. He then pulled forward and struck two parked vehicles, police said.

Barba suffered a head injury in the crash and was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu, where he died at 7:15 p.m. June 12.

Police do not believe that speed, alcohol or drugs were factors in this crash, and authorities are awaiting the results of an autopsy.

Barba's accident was in a private parking lot, which means his death will not be counted in the official Big Island traffic fatality tally, which now stands at 17.
