Susan O'Malley, the first female president of a National Basketball Association team, won't renew her contract with Washington Sports & Entertainment, L.P., which owns the Wizards franchise and the Verizon Center arena.

O'Malley, 45, will stay on to advise team owner Abe Pollin in his search for a replacement after her contract expires June 30, the company said in a news release posted on its Web site. She plans to leave in December, after the arena's 10th anniversary.

O'Malley became president of the then-Washington Bullets in May 1991, when she was 29 years old and no other woman had ever held the position, the company said. During her time as president, the company opened the 20,000 seat Verizon Center arena in 1997 and created the Washington Mystics WNBA team in 1998.

She also ran business operations for the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League from 1995 to 1999. The team made the Stanley Cup Finals in 1998. The company later sold both the Capitals and the Mystics to Lincoln Holdings LLC.

O'Malley said she would take vacation before announcing her plans. She graduated from Georgetown University Law School earlier this year.
