Mama's Fish House on Maui earns national honors

Advertiser Staff

Mama's Fish House on Maui's North Shore earned national honors as first in the "Top 10 Seafood Spots by the Sea" in the June issue of Sunset magazine.

The magazine said Mama's "is a bit more expensive than your average fish joint" but said the oceanside setting bordered by swaying palms and million-dollar-view make it seem like a bargain.

"Don't miss the Pua Me Hua Hana special: a platter of mahimahi sautéed in coconut milk, kalua pig, grilled banana, Molokai purple sweet potatoes, poi, tropical fruit, and fresh coconut," the magazine advised. "All that, and you don't have to sit through a bad luau."

The restaurant was founded 34 years ago by the Christenson family.

"It's such an honor to be the only restaurant in Hawai'i to receive this recognition, especially when there are so many fine seafood restaurants in the Aloha State," said vice president Karen Christenson Marshall.

"Thanks go to our fabulous executive chef Perry Bateman and the rest of our family of employees, and of course all the fishermen who deliver us the best fish on a daily basis," she said.

Fleshing out the Top 10 list were five California restaurants, two in Oregon, one in Washington and one in British Columbia. Sunset magazine, which focuses on the Western states, covers the areas of food and entertaining, home remodeling and building, travel and gardening.
