Bill funnels financial aid to former Del Monte workers

Advertiser Staff

Some former Del Monte Fresh Produce workers may receive state financial help with their mortgages and rent, under a bill signed today by Lt. Gov. James "Duke" Aiona.

The new law appropriates $1.2 million over two years for a housing assistance program for the workers, who were laid off when Del Monte abruptly closed late last year. Workers were paid through Jan. 22.

The Hawai'i Housing Finance and Development Corp., the state agency that will administer the housing assistance, has said the program could be operating by the end of the year.
