Kono wins, Kim, Chun lose in U.S. Women's Publinx

Tonya Choate of Mt. Vernon, Mo., defeated second-seeded Kimberly Kim, 3 and 2, in the second round of match play today of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links at Kearney Hill Golf Links in Lexington, Ky.Kim, a 15-year-old former Big Island resident living in Arizona, follows the early exit of top seed and stroke-play medalist Tiffany Lua, who lost to Honolulu's Stephanie Kono in the first round yesterday.
Kono, a 17-year-old Punahou student, today defeated Felicia Espericueta of Edinburg, Texas, 2 and 1 to advance to this afternoon's round of 16 against Pamela Ontiveros of Mexico. Ontiveros defeated Elizabeth Dotson of White Bluff, Tenn., 2 up.
Mari Chun of Pearl City lost to Ryann O'Toole of San Clemente, Calif., with a birdie on the 19th hole, in the round of 32.
Choate, a Drury University senior-to-be, will play defending champion Tiffany Joh of San Diego in the round of 16.
