College: Nevada hoops coach gets raise, extension

RENO, Nev. — State regents have approved a contract extension for Nevada basketball coach Mark Fox that provides nearly $800,000 more to keep him until 2014.The Wolf Pack at one point this season climbed to ninth in the nation — it's highest ever in national polls. The team won three straight Western Athletic Conference championships in the past three years, with Fox earning WAC coach of the year honors.
Regents cited those accomplishments in approving the contract extension.
Under his 2006 contract, Fox was paid a base salary of $400,000 a year with annual $25,000 cost-of-living increase and other perks and performance bonuses.
Last August, after a discussion with Nebraska about a job opening, Fox received a $100,000 raise from money contributed by boosters that brought his salary to $500,000 for the 2006-07 season.
Under the extension, Fox will receive an additional $91,000 for the first year of the contract that began in June 2006 and an additional $100,000 annually for the remaining seven years.
If Fox quits before July 2011, he must pay the university $250,000.
