8 Big Island schools get $16.3 million for upgrades

Eight Big Island schools will receive $16.3 million worth of upgrades over the next couple years, according to a news release from Gov. Linda Lingle's office.

Pahoa High & Intermediate School has a new gymnasium scheduled for completion in April 2009, the release said.

Kalaniana'ole Elementary & Intermediate School will get air conditioning in three buildings, as well as related electrical work. The work should be completed in July 2009.

Honoka'a Elementary School will have an electrical upgrade to support the school's computer and technology needs. The work should be finished by August 2008. Honaunau Elementary School will have similar work done.

A 75-year-old building at Hilo High School will have air conditioning installed by March, and by the end of 2009 should have a new gymnasium that will also serve as a emergency shelter, the release said.

Na'alehu Elementary & Intermediate School, which currently has 11 parking stalls on campus, should have another 59 by July.

Waimea Middle School should have a new eight-classroom building by May 2008.

Kea'au Elementary School will receive a second access road on campus by June.
