MLB: Tejada Goes on DL, Ends Games-Played Streak

By Bob Bensch
Bloomberg News

The Baltimore Orioles placed shortstop Miguel Tejada on the 15-day disabled list today, ending the fifth-longest consecutive-games-played streak in Major League Baseball history.

Tejada has a broken forearm bone near his wrist, the Orioles said in a news release. He sustained the injury when he was hit by a pitch in San Diego two days ago.

Tejada, 31, had played in 1,152 consecutive games and was 55 shy of passing Steve Garvey for the fourth-longest streak. Juan Pierre of the Los Angeles Dodgers has the second-longest active streak at 334 games.

Former Orioles player Cal Ripken Jr. holds the major-league record of 2,632 straight games.

Tejada, who is batting .306 with seven homers and 41 runs batted in this season, last missed a game on May 31, 2000, while with Oakland. He started yesterday's game at San Diego before being removed for a pinch-runner in the top of the first inning.

The Orioles recalled outfielder Jon Knott from their Triple- A affiliate in Norfolk, Virginia, to take Tejada's roster spot. Baltimore also activated catcher Ramon Hernandez from the disabled list and designated catcher Alberto Castillo for assignment, giving them 10 days to trade or release him or send him to the minor leagues.
