Fort Shafter centennial events, music today

Fort Shafter has been a part of Hawai'i for 100 years. Today, at the historic Palm Circle, the public is invited to celebrate the centennial with several scheduled events starting at 10 a.m. and running through 5 p.m.

Military bands, ceremonies, displays and demonstrations will be staged.

At 11 a.m., Lt. Gov. James Aiona will deliver remarks at the dedication ceremony, where a centennial tree will be planted and a time capsule will be sealed.

The celebration is free and open to everyone. Parking will be at Fort Shafter Flats, on the south side of Moanalua Road. Shuttle buses will operate throughout the day beginning at 9:30 a.m.

A schedule of events:

10 a.m.: Centennial event begins on Palm Circle

10 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. : Check out Army equipment displays and historic re-enactors, or get a bite to eat while the kids play with keiki activities and games set up by Army MWR.

10:15 a.m.- 10:55 a.m.: Listen to the sounds of American Belles on the gazebo

11 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.: Watch the Centennial Dedication Ceremony at the gazebo

Noon- 5 p.m. : Listen all afternoon on the gazebo to serenades by the Marine Forces Pacific group, U.S. Air Force Hana Hou, U.S. Navy Dixieland Band, Strolling Strings and the 111th National Guard Band.

4:45 p.m. - 5 p.m.: Watch the Formal Retreat Ceremony to conclude the day's celebration.
