Advertiser Staff

Leslie H. Kondo has been appointed interim commissioner on the Public Utilities Commission.

Kondo was appointed yesterday by Gov. Linda Lingle. Kondo will fill the vacancy created by the retirement of commissioner Wayne Kimura and will serve for the remainder of the six-year term that expires on June 30, 2008.

Since February 2003, Kondo served as director of the State of Hawai'i Office of Information Practices, which administers Hawai'i's open meetings and public records laws.

The Public Utilities Commission regulates all franchised or certificated public service companies operating in Hawai'i; prescribes rates, tariffs, charges and fees; determines the allowable rate of earnings in establishing rates; issues guidelines concerning the general management of franchised or certificated utility businesses; and acts on requests for the acquisition, sale, disposition or other exchange of utility properties, including mergers and consolidations.
