Halau Ku Mana charter school seeks emergency aid

Advertiser Staff

Halau Ku Mana Public Charter School has to vacate its home at the back of Manoa, in what was Paradise Park, by June 30. It has found a new home in Makiki, on land leased from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, but still needs $150,000 to complete its facility and get it operational in time for the new school year.

Just above the Makiki Pumping Station, Halau Ku Mana staff and 'ohana have cleared land where eight trailers, painted a cheerful green and blue, have been put in place. But with just two weeks remaining, the school still needs to build walkways and ramps, have utilities hooked up and install a fire hydrant, among other things.

The school is calling on people to make donations of time, skill, supplies and money.

The school is holding four volunteer work days: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

tomorrow, June 30, July 7 and July 14. Help during the week is also welcome. Volunteers are needed to pack, move, set up, clear land, pull weeds and replant native plants. The school is also looking for skilled help to make minor renovations to two trailers, replace a gate, repair a rock wall and landscape.
