Vigil today aimed at protecting world's oceans, sea life

Advertiser Staff

A group that opposes what it says is the "militarization" of the world's oceans will hold a candlelight vigil beginning at 6:30 p.m. today at Queen's Beach in Waikiki , across from the Honolulu Zoo.

Group members said high intensity active sonar is currently ripping through the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. More than 30,000 U.S. and Australian troops are engaging in their bi-annual attack on Shoalwater Bay on the eastern coast of Australia, group members said.

Live-fire exercises, amphibious troop invasions, and high intensity active sonar exercises are wreaking havoc on the precious near-shore ocean environment of Australia, members of the organization said.
