Hawaii soccer teams lose in semis

All three Hawai'i teams lost yesterday in the semifinal round of the U.S. Youth Soccer Far West Regionals in Las Vegas, Nev.

The HSC Bulls '88 Under 19 boys fell to SD Surf White (California South), 2-1.

The Ka'oi Rampage Under 12 girls lost to Neusport FC '95 Green (Nevada), 4-1.

The Leahi '91 Premier Under 16 girls were beaten by FC Portland Sapphire (Oregon), 1-0.

In all, 17 Hawai'i teams competed in the regional with nine advancing out of pool play to quarterfinal action. Six were eliminated Friday.

More than 10,000 teams nationwide competed in U.S. Youth Soccer State Championships with about 900 advancing to regional play.

The West Region has teams from Alaska, Arizona, California (North and South), Colorado, Hawai'i, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

METZGER, LAMBERT FALL

Punahou graduates Stein Metzger and Mike Lambert fell in the semifinals to Brazil's Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos yesterday at the $600,000 Henekl Grand Chelem in Paris.

Metzger and Lambert, the 14th seeds, beat Spain's Pablo Herrera and Raul Mesa, 21-16, 21-17, in Round 3 before losing to the second-seeded Brazilians, 21-16, 21-15. They will play Germany's Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann in today's third-place match.

The first of five majors on the 2007 SWATCH-FIVB World Tour concludes today.


GOLF

CHAN LEADS QUALIFYING

Lorens Chan shot a final-round 1-under-par 71 yesterday to capture medalist honors of the USGA Junior Amateur boys qualifier at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.

Chan finished the 36-hole qualifier with a 4-under 140 total.

TJ Kua shot 74—143 to earn the second berth in the national tournament, which starts July 23 at Boone Valley Golf Course in Missouri.

Alex Ching (77) beat Bradley Shigezawa (70) in a playoff for the two top alternate spots after both finished at 145.

OKINO TOPS QUALIFYING

Cyd Okino shot a 1-under-par 72 yesterday to earn medalist honors of the USGA Junior Amateur girls qualifier at Wailua Golf Course on Kaua'i.

Chihiro Ikeda and Elyse Okada earned the other two berths in the national tournament, which starts July 23 at Tacoma Country & Golf Club in Lakewood, Wash. Ikeda and Okada beat out Cassy Isagawa in a playoff after all three shot 3-over 76.

Isagawa will be the first alternate and Tamara Surtees (79) earned the second alternate spot after defeating Kelcie Kawano in a playoff.


SWIMMING

SAKAMOTO, BRODEN WIN

Noa Sakamoto outraced John Flanagan to the finish yesterday to win the Raging Isle Sprint by seven-tenths of a second.

Sakamoto completed the 1-mile course from Sunset Beach to 'Ehukai Beach Park in 17 minutes, 53.6 seconds. Flanagan finished in 17:54.3, followed by Kalen Darling in 17:59.7.

Mia Broden won the women's open division in 19:51.9, followed by Nicole Hagi (21:04.0) and Kristi Torkildson (21:17.0).

The Raging Isle Sprint is the first of four races in the 2007 North Shore Swim Series.
