Decommissioned sub will be taken to Pearl Harbor

Associated Press

A nuclear-powered attack submarine named for the Twin Cities has ended 23 years of service.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul was decommissioned Friday in a ceremony at the naval base in Norfolk, Va.

During its service, the 360-foot-long ship visited 26 different ports and was involved in 12 deployments, the most recent a six-month stint in the North Atlantic.

Built in 1984, the sub was deactivated because it would have required expensive upgrades. The Minneapolis-St. Paul will be taken to Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and scrapped, with some of its parts salvaged for use on other submarines of its class.
