Gov. Linda Lingle releases list of potential vetoes

Advertiser Staff

Gov. Linda Lingle today identified 33 bills that she may veto, including a bill that would provide $3 million for pedestrian safety improvements.

Lingle said she was concerned about taking the money from the state's highway trust fund.

Other bills on the list include one that would give psychologists the right to prescribe medication to patients at federally qualified health centers, and one that would grant immunity from prosecution to people who leave newborns at hospitals or police or fire stations within 72 hours of birth.

Lingle said she would allow a bill that creates more regional control within the Hawaii Health Systems Corp., the state's quasi public hospital system, to become law. The governor has until July 10 to veto the bills. The state Legislature could come back into session that day for an override session.

Bills that are not signed or vetoed by that date will automatically become law.
