Search continues off Kauai beach for missing swimmer

Advertiser Staff

Fire rescue specialists and U.S. Coast Guard officials are continuing a search off a Kaua'i beach area for a 42-year-old Washington man who witnesses said was swept out to sea.

Roy Overstreet from Bellingham, Wash., was swimming at Larson's Beach at about 5:45 p.m. yesterday with his wife Cara Jaye, 42, when they were reported swept out to sea, according to the Kaua'i Fire Department officials.

Michael Ancharski, 56, of Kapahi, reportedly swam out and tried to assist the couple, but also ran into difficulty.

Jaye made it back to shore on her own, while her husband was reportedly swept further out. She sustained minor injuries and was taken to Wilcox Hospital for treatment.

Firefighters from the Hanalei fire station brought Ancharski safely to shore. Ancharski did not require hospitalization.

Rescue specialists from the Lihu'e fire station also responded to the incident and assisted with the search. Air-1 was called to the scene to do aerial searches.

At nightfall, the rescue specialists and firefighters ended their search. The Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and continued searching through the night.

At about 8 this morning, rescue specialists and firefighters resumed their shoreline search, while Air-1 conducted aerial searches. The Coast Guard sent a C130 fixed wing plane to the scene this morning to join in the search and relieve the helicopter crew.
